Sewing Lesson 1

Sewing Lesson 1

My first sewing lesson took place on 24th March, Monday. We received a sewing kit each which contained the necessary items to help us in our creation of our product. Ms Chionh then described the different functions of the items and the parts of the sewing machine as well as how to use it. She then briefed us on all the safety rules and how to handle the sewing machine and the items, especially the scissors, carefully so as not to cause injury to ourselves and others. After seeing the samples made by other students, we were inspired to create our own original design and put all our efforts into making the bag. Soon, all of us got to operate the sewing machine and give a try on sewing. Although I was rather afraid of experiencing an accident, like unintentionally sewing my finger, I got over my initial fear and started enjoying the process.

Design Task:
In preparation for the Food and Consumer Education module in Year 2, you are to construct a bag for carrying all the cookery towels and containers using recycled materials at home. You are to incorporate any form of decoration to enhance the appearance of your bag.

Task Analysis:
I have to find a suitable cloth to create the bag and the necessary decorations, as well as learning how to operate the sewing machine. The bag must be big and durable enough to fit and carry the cookery towels and containers.

Criteria:

  • Big (the right size)
  • Durable enough to support the weight of all the cookery equipments.
  • The straps cannot be too long to prevent the bag from touching the floor but they cannot be too short if I want to carry the bag over the shoulder.
  • The decoration(s) should preferably be simple yet attractive.
